[ Editor's note: This is a review of the final, shipping version of Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, provided to Macworld by Microsoft in advance of the suite's general release.] represents the largest step forward for serious Mac spreadsheet jockeys in many years, more so than either ( ) or ( ). There are literally hundreds of improvements, some very noticeable, others not quite as much so. The big news for power users is the return of macro support (more on that later), but there’s good stuff to be found for Excel users of all levels. Some uneven performance issues and a lack of Mac-standard features, however, prevent this version from Excel from attaining perfection. Pages for mac \text formatting\.

The interface Excel 2011 looks much different than its 2004 and 2008 predecessors. Gone are the numerous floating toolbars and the floating formatting palette. Excel 2011 replaces all of those floating bits with two toolbars (standard and formatting) and the Ribbon, a collection of small tabs that provide easy access to often-used commands. You can customize the Ribbon, or even disable it if you wish.

Part 2 of our series on Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 brings us to that wonder of spreadsheets: Excel. From doing basic math to shortening and combining pieces of data, or even just keeping track of the things you need, Excel has got you covered. In Excel 2011 for mac, a PivotTable is a special kind of table that summarizes data from a table, data range, or database external to the workbook. If you’re PivotTable aficionado, you will be in seventh heaven with the new PivotTable capabilities in Office 2011 for Mac. In case anyone else had as much trouble figuring this out as I did if you want to break up a cell in the Mac edition of Microsoft Excel into multiple lines, you need to hold down the Option and Command keys while pressing Return.

It's context sensitive, so it changes to match the task at hand. For example, if you double-click an image, the Ribbon will open to a greatly improved set of image-editing commands. The Ribbon and toolbars are now integrated in each Excel window, so there’s nothing floating around outside your workspace. A couple of optional floating windows remain, but they’re not required in most typical spreadsheet work. The Ribbon’s tabs are compact, and the Ribbon itself can collapse to a single row of tabs when not in use.

As a result, the new Excel’s work area doesn’t feel smaller than that of the older versions. With the interface now contained in a single window, working with multiple workbooks at once is simpler. For example, you previously couldn’t compare formulas between workbooks, because the formula bar existed only once for every open workbook. Now each workbook has its own formula bar. Other minor touches abound. There’s a full 32-bit color palette instead of 40 colors. Drag-resizing a window now updates it in real time, instead of merely dragging an outline.

SmartArt has over 150 pre-made templates (up from 80-ish), all of which you can customize. A media browser provides fast access to photos, audio, movies, clip art, symbols, and shapes. For the most part these new features work quite well. There is some lag when you live-resize windows, even on current hardware, but the delay is bearable. UI overhaul: Excel’s new all-in-one-window interface with the Chart ribbon open.

Working with spreadsheets Beyond the visual overhaul, Excel 2011 provides many new or improved ways of working with spreadsheets and the data they hold. Right up front, you’ll notice a new Workbook Gallery (similar to the Template Choose feature in [ ]) that appears when you launch the application. Although it doesn't contain a ton of stock templates, you can browse a huge online template collection directly from the gallery window. Tiny, yet helpful: The new sparklines provide useful insight in a single cell. One of Excel 2011’s innovative new features is sparklines, which are simply graphs of data values that appear within a single cell. Instead of building a full chart to look for a trend in your data, you can often use a sparkline to show what you need to see in a simpler and quicker manner.

Excel Insert Text To Cell

Creating sparklines is as easy as selecting some data, choosing a menu item, and clicking a destination cell. Conditional formatting, long one of my favorite ways of spotting key values in a large data stream, is greatly improved in Excel 2011. No longer are you restricted to three conditional formatting rules per cell; the limit now depends only on your available RAM. The archaic editor in prior versions of Excel has been replaced with a larger and more intuitive interface. You can now pick from four predefined conditional formats (including data bars, color scales, and special icons), or set the format based on a formula (as before). You can also easily rearrange existing rules—a most welcome improvement.

Question: Q: Pages' highlighting won't unhighlight in Word So, I'm writing on behalf of a coworker who (we all use PC's with Word at work = ) works with a contractor who has a Mac and Pages. When she sends us documents, they are about 45 pages long with all types of formatting, mainly highlighting. In OSX 10.7.4 just find some highlighted text (or if you have Word on your mac, just copy and paste into your email. So, I'm writing on behalf of a coworker who (we all use PC's with Word at work = ) works with a contractor who has a Mac and Pages. When she sends us documents, they are about 45 pages long with all types of formatting, mainly highlighting. When he opens up the exported.doc file from Pages, here, he can't unhighlight stuff she's highlighted - the only way he can work around it is to unformat the WHOLE thing which really makes going back through a time-consuming process. Is the 'highlighting' from Pages (background color, I guess) really that incompatible with Word?

Anyone had a similar issue or a workaround? I can't unhighlight even on my Word, so it's something with the exported file from Pages. Word's highlighting feature lets you display color behind text. (Don't confuse the term highlight with select-they're not the same, although many people use the terms interchangeably.) In Word 2007/2010, the highlighting option's in the Font group on the Home tab. Similar to most formatting options, this one's easy to use. Select a color from the dropdown and select your text, which makes this option just a bit different than others because you select the color before you select the text. A second click disables the tool. To remove existing highlight, select the text and choose No Color from the Text Highlight dropdown. Most of you already know about this tool; what you might not know about is 2007/2010's new keyboard shortcut for this tool.

Simply select the text and press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+H to highlight the current selection. It acts as a toggle, so repeat those steps to remove the highlight. Since you're not selecting a color, this method applies the currently selected color, but if you don't change the color often, you can probably live with it. It's a great addition to the ribbon version, but, if you're using Word 2003, there's no keyboard shortcut for this feature. You can add one of your own as follows.

It can be opened by many different programs and doesn't include any special formatting, fonts, images or other embedded data. Click the insertion cursor anywhere in the file and begin typing. To edit existing text, drag the insertion cursor across the characters to highlight them and type the replacement text. TextEdit automatically replaces the existing characters with those that you type. To simply delete text, highlight the characters and press Delete. Read More• • • • And so users ran to solutions like WhatsApp, which grew huge audiences on the back of one simple idea: it's like texting, only better and free. Text Apple built a huge devoted fanbase for iMessage by adding features right on top of texting. SMS squandered its tremendous inherent advantage—it's built into your phone, so everyone has it—by steadfastly. It raises a fascinating hypothetical: if carriers had stopped charging for texts and added in new tech like group chats and stickers, would the likes of WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and GroupMe even exist?

Over the last couple of years, Google has been working with hundreds of carriers and manufacturers around the world to bring the text message into the 21st century. Using a standard called Rich Communications Services, the group plans to make a texting app that comes with your phone and is every bit as powerful as those dedicated messaging apps. This would make all the best features available to everyone with an Android phone. Oh, and the plan's working. New carriers have been slowly announcing RCS support over the last few months. Sprint, Rogers, Telenor, and other global giants all bought in. Now Deutsche Telekom, Globe, and Orange are on board, as is Vodafone on a limited basis.

A lot of you might have different methods to convert a text document into another format. The simplest method for some of you will be to open the text document in a simple editor such as TextEdit, and then export it as another format. Another method could be to open the file in Microsoft Word and save it as a Rich Text or Plain Text document. One method that you might not know about is using a command in Terminal to convert files from one format to another. While this method might not suit all of you, it’s a good use of OS X’s command line. Textutil -convert FILEFORMAT Here, replace FILEFORMAT with any of the following formats into which you want to convert your file into: • txt • html • rtf • rtfd • doc • docx • wordml • odt • webarchive 3.

Html how to position text

Press the space bar on your Mac and ensure there’s a space after the file format, and then drag the document you want to convert into the Terminal window: Once done, the total command will look something like this, depending on the file name and file location: Once you execute this command, the new (converted) file will appear in the same folder as the original. Batch convert text files to other formats A good use of this command is to batch convert text documents into another format. To do this, instead of dragging a specific file, drag a complete folder to the Terminal window. Then, after the folder path, simply add a forward slash to the end of the folder path (ensure that there is no space between the path and the forward slash) ‘/’, followed by “*.FORMAT”. Replace FORMAT with the original file format, which you’re converting.

For example, in the command below, all.docx files in the folder “Docs” will be converted to.txt files. And for those of you who prefer not to use such commands, a quick way to strip text of all formatting is to paste it into Terminal, and then copy it back to the desired format you want to paste it in. Conclusion Using Terminal to quickly batch convert documents is a simple and cost-effective measure, which you can take advantage of without downloading any other third-party applications. While some of you will prefer to use simple text editors such as TextEdit for this, many of you will like this use of Terminal and take full advantage of it. Just remember, don’t mess up the commands, as messing around in Terminal has proved to be disastrous for many in the past. Be sure to let us know in the comments below which text editor you prefer to convert documents from one format to another. Also, let us know whether the above methods worked for you or not.

Back in the pre-Mac OS X and macOS days, Apple’s System 9 and earlier relied on hidden metadata to associate files with apps. File extensions, those bits of text that follow a period at the end of a file (like.doc,.html, or.jpg) were optional, although often used for compatibility with other platforms and with web. On the web, file extensions are effectively mandatory so a browser knows how to handle a file appropriately. Macworld reader Rick would like to monkey with that. He has a number of HTML templates, but to differentiate them from his production.html files, he puts the suffix.tt on them instead. Browsers don’t recognize these files by default. There’s a way to force an association between a file type and an application, but that application still has to recognize the extension.

If you have an extension that’s simply not mapping correctly, you can follow these steps: • Select the file in the Finder and choose File > Convert mp3 to text for free n a mac. Get Info. • In the Open With section, if there’s an appropriate app in the list, you can select it and click Change All and confirm, and now all files with that extension open in that app. You can stop here.

But if the app you want doesn’t appear in the list, select Other. • Choose the app from the list that shows.

In the Enable pop-up menu, you can choose All Applications, and it will let you pick any app. Check the Always Open With box to force an association. IDG While you can assign apps to file types, the apps may refuse to open them. If you’re using, for example,.tt as your HTML template extensions like Rick, you could go through steps 1 to 4, and pick Safari as the app to open.tt files. The trouble is that Safari doesn’t know that a.tt file contains HTML. In the olden days, when everything to do with the web was more in a state of flux, you could modify and add content mappings, usually in the form used by MIME, a decades-old method of associating actions and formats with file extensions. (You’ll see MIME mentioned explicitly in email programs’ headers.
